Axel Munthe was well known in Sweden as the builder of his Capri-estate Villa San Michele and for being special physician to the royal family and individual cherisher of the Swedish Queen Victoria.
Axel Munthe had since young days a tender passion for the country around Lake Siljan and especially the rural district of Leksand. Those feelings for nature was associated with ruling National Romanticism that reached a height during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Influenced by this Axel Munthe chose a beautiful site close to Leksand Church where he realised the building which became the family's summer estate.
